A federal tax credit for first-time homeowners may have expired for most Americans but not for certain members of the armed forces.
Those who were on extended duty for at least 90 days between Dec. 31, 2008 and May 1, 2010 can still qualify for the $8,000 tax incentive as long as they sign a contract on or before April 30, and close escrow by June 30, according to federal guidelines.
The rule also applies to certain federal workers who were overseas during that period of time.
From the IRS website:
Members of the uniformed services, members of the Foreign Service and employees of the intelligence community are eligible for this special rule. It applies to any individual (and, if married, the individual’s spouse) who serves on qualified official extended duty service outside of the United States for at least 90 days during the period beginning after Dec. 31, 2008, and ending before May 1, 2010.
